Tåmu, the Crafter of Rivers
Tåmu is a spiritual being that created and dwells in the rivers of Guam. Similar to how Gargoyles look menacing but infact ward off evil, Tåmu is often confused for an evil being because of his facial features and demeanor. He rarely leaves the water and only from his chest and up can be seen. Only when he goes to the estuaries to meet his brother Gåmson, the Trickster of the Ocean, or his sister Asgon, the Fragrant Lady, he would fully emerge out of the water. His appearance is somewhat categorized as a brute and tall as a full-grown coconut tree.
He is responsible for the many channels guiding the water to the villagers who settle near the riverbanks. This caring and nurturing being, was also very stern and made sure everything was in order. This is why rivers flow in one direction. When the natives would dig and try to redirect the water, in anger, Tåmu would saturate the ground, making it soft. The once solid land the villagers settled in becomes a swampy, bog-like area where the water ceases to flow.
When villagers would be disruptive and unruly in the rivers, Tåmu would teach them a lesson by making the surrounding banks slippery and therefore it would be impossible to leave the river. To reverse this, the naughty villagers would have to go to the center of the river, lift their hands in the air and apologize.
